Department Summary
First Year Experience (FYE) is a component of Michigan Housing that creates a welcoming community for students in their transition to campus by engaging them in programs related to personal and academic growth, navigating campus resources, building meaningful connections with others, and prioritizing well-being.
Job Summary
The Program Managers for First Year Experience are responsible for supporting community building programs, skill-building programs, cohort and partner programs, signature programs, and outreach within First Year Experience on behalf of Michigan Housing. The Program Managers are also responsible for implementing annual FYE events and initiatives while also creating culturally relevant curriculum for programs that develop skills for all students. The work focuses on providing welcoming and inclusive student experiences through peer-facilitated small groups, socials, and interest-based programs. In supervising FYE student facilitators, the Program Managers are also responsible for consistently developing and implementing training on facilitation, leadership development, and diversity, equity, and inclusion.
FYE will be hiring two Program Managers to lead and implement programming.
Program Management (60%)
- Provide strategic vision and management of all training, program development, outreach, scheduling, facilitation, and evaluation components of identified initiatives.
- Student Supervision:
- Recruit, hire, train, develop, and supervise up to 10 student facilitators.
- Recruit, hire, train, develop, and supervise a graduate student coordinator.
- Lead coordination and implement staff meetings for the student facilitator team.
- Program Design & Implementation:
- Develop, lead, and implement new initiatives and one-time community building programs focused on small groups and building meaningful connections among students.
- Provide direction and support to community building programs focused on first-year and transfer students.
- Develop, lead, and implement new and existing requestable programs covering a variety of topics such as time management, budgeting, wellness, and more to support students’ transition to the university.
- Manage program logistics including room reservations, catering orders, supplies needs, and managing allocated budget.
- Implement program evaluations, interpret and report out results, and implement programmatic changes based on student feedback and achievement of learning outcomes.
- Research emerging and relevant pedagogy around program areas and incorporating concepts into program curriculum.
- Maintain and update marketing materials, including FYE website pages for specific programs, digital signs, newsletter, and other print and digital materials.
- Provide oversight and serve on-call for backup facilitation and addressing any program concerns during meetings and socials on weekday evenings and some weekends.
- Support overall First Year Experience Programming efforts and outreach to first-year students, including activities such as tabling, Diag Days, and webinars.
Partnership Development (20%)
- Build connections, and strengthen a network of other first-year facing programs and organizations and campus partners; serve as a resource to the campus.
- Build cross-campus partnerships to connect tools, resources, and opportunities directly to incoming students, including cohorts.
- Develop and maintain connections with academic units and departments engaged in incoming student programs to assess connections and overlap.
- Serve as a member of the Welcome to Michigan Committee and FYE Network.
Michigan Housing Infrastructure Support (20%)
- Provide event support for Michigan Housing department-wide efforts and events.
- Contribute to creating a workplace environment that reflects Michigan Housing and University values.
- Serve on Student Life committees & external committees as unit interests align in order to best represent FYE and Michigan Housing work on campus.
- Build relationships with Student Life and campus partners to explore new program and outreach opportunities.
- Other duties as assigned.
- Master’s degree in related field is required (Higher Education, Sociology, Psychology, Social Work, Public Health) that is completed by July 1, 2022, or Bachelor’s degree and 3 years of related professional experience.
- At least one year of experience (graduate or professional) in student affairs and/or related education services work with emphasis on building inclusive communities.
- Two years of experience (graduate or professional) in student supervision/advising, program leadership, and facilitation experience.
- Work Authorization: Must be legally authorized to work in the United States without company sponsorship.
- Previous experience working in First Year Experience, Sophomore Experience, or theme community leadership.
- Prior experience facilitating and/or programming around topics of multiculturalism, diversity, equity, and inclusion.
- Familiarity with Restorative Justice principles.
- Experience working or living in on-campus housing or community settings.
- Working knowledge of University policies and procedures.

Requires working weekly evening hours for meetings and periodic weekend hours during peak operational events (examples: retreats, programs, socials); Coordinate with supervisor to design a flexible work schedule.
Direct reports
This position directly supervises up to 10 undergraduate student facilitators and 1 Graduate Student Coordinator (student positions).
This role may have reporting obligations under Title IX and Clery.
